Atlas Copco introduces HB 4100 heavy breaker

Atlas Copco’s new addition to its heavy hydraulic breaker line, the HB 4100, provides better performance and higher efficiency than the preceding model and weighs less. It has a service weight of 9,039 pounds (designed for carriers in the 88,185- to 154,324-pound weight class), but is as powerful as other, much heavier breakers.

“The improvement is considerable,” explained Keith Becker, Atlas Copco product development specialist for hydraulic breakers. “We were able to achieve double-digit percentage increases in power and efficiency while holding on to our known reliability.”

Reduced weight and better performance means that similar results can be achieved with a smaller hydraulic breaker. A lighter breaker also means that a smaller excavator can be used, saving both investment and operating costs. According to Becker, “The return on investment is many times greater than the pure acquisition costs. The reduction of total cost of ownership conserves resources such as man hours and fuel. The HB 4100 does this with its durability and simple maintenance concepts.”

Another improvement to the HB 4100 hydraulic breaker is a guide system that makes the breaker more stable and resilient. “Hydraulic breakers are ultimately subjected to use under the most extreme conditions,” Becker added. “A new cover plate for the retaining bars offers more protection in the lower part of the breaker. This area receives the most wear and tear, especially on demolition jobs. The HB 4100 also has increased wear protection at the bottom of the case, which has proven its worth with all heavy hydraulic breakers from Atlas Copco.”

The new HB 4100 also includes the following standard features of the Atlas Copco heavy hydraulic breaker series:
– The VibroSilenced system protects operators against noise and vibrations.
– PowerAdapt switches the breaker off in the event of a hydraulic overflow.
– AutoControl adjusts the blow frequency and blow energy to match the hardness of the material.
– ContiLube TM II is an integrated, automatic lubrication system.
– StartSelect allows the operator to influence the startup and shutdown behavior of the hydraulic breaker.
– The optional DustProtector protects the lower part of the hydraulic breaker from dust and rock particles.

The HB 4100 hydraulic breaker is suitable for secondary and primary rock breaking in quarries, demolition of concrete, steel and pavement, trenching, dredging, tunneling and foundation work.

How to Store Your Attachments and Work Tools

Roy Brookhart, Caterpillars’ product and Application Specialist recently published a report on how to store your attachments and work tools to ensure they reliably perform every time you need them.  Follow these simple guidelines to prolong the life of your attachments and work tools:

1. All hydraulic hose/tube ends must be properly capped or plugged.  This is done best with hydraulic quick disconnect fittings. These quick disconnect fittings must be kept clean or they can introduce dirt and contamination into the hydraulic system.  An excellent practice is to connect the male and female quick disconnect fittings together when a work tool attachment is removed from the machine.  This not only keeps contamination out of the system but also eliminates pressure build up in the hoses.  When too much pressure is allowed to build up in the hoses, they can be difficult or impossible to connect together.

2. Work Tool attachments should be placed on dedicated stands or shelves for easy retrieval. You can also store them on pallets or wood blocks, but they must be kept off the ground to avoid moisture damage from dew and condensation.  Most brooms have storage legs.  These legs should be used to keep the rotating bristles off the ground so the bristles don’t permanently bend and create flat spots. Don’t let hoses or wiring harnesses and connectors hang freely where they can be crushed or touching the ground.

3. In an ideal world, Work Tool attachment hydraulic oil would be filtered/cleaned before connecting to the carrier machine. Filtering the hydraulic oil left in a Work Tool attachment prevents the carrier’s hydraulic system from becoming cross-contaminated.  Keep the carrier machine’s hydraulic oil clean, change hydraulic filters on a regular schedule, keep quick disconnect fittings clean, and don’t connect machines and work tool attachments together if you are not sure that the oil in both is clean and of the same type.

4. Clean the Work Tool attachments before you remove them from the machine for storage.  Clean dirt from pivots and joints so they are free to move.  Make sure that all grease points are clean and lubricated after each use.  Follow the Work Tool attachment maintenance instructions.  Some tools such as cold planers require the teeth to be cleaned after each use or they will not turn freely.  If the teeth tips can not turn freely, they will wear too quickly and must be replaced.

5. Keep your storage yard orderly and clear of trash and debris. When aisles are free of obstructions, accessing Work Tool attachments is quick, safe and easy.

Hopefully you will find these of some use!!

Case Introduces Excavator Digging Systems

Case announced the availability of Case Smart Digging Systems components, including new pin-on buckets, coupler buckets, the Case Multi-Fit Coupler and the SmartFit™ bucket teeth system. The new attachments and components expand the versatility and productivity of Case excavators.

Case pin-on buckets are designed for heavy-duty, high-capacity applications such as digging in dense soil, clay, loose rock and gravel. Available models include:

•    Heavy-duty buckets with a rugged cutting edge and durable horizontal wear strip
•    Severe-duty buckets featuring rugged T-1 or AR400 steel in all high-wear areas, along with double bottom and horizontal wear strips and thicker edges for improved durability and strength
•    Heavy-duty, high-capacity buckets with 20-percent higher capacity than standard, plus the heavy-duty design features of the other buckets
•    Ditching buckets with a formed back wrapper for enhanced loadability and production along with tapered sidewalls for easier dumping of sticky material.

The Case Multi-Fit Coupler offers complete hydraulic latching, enabling excavator operators to quickly attach and detach buckets and other components without leaving the cab. A patented mechanical blocking system eliminates manual safety pin insertion.

The universal design of the coupler enables Case excavators to connect a wide range of Case and other OEM buckets and attachments within the same size class. A hydraulic check valve and mechanical blocking bar help prevent the accidental release of an attachment.

Designed for the Multi-Fit Coupler, Case coupler buckets feature integrated bucket pins to prevent any loss of breakout force that might otherwise occur when using a coupler device. Available in a wide range of sizes, the coupler buckets work in either the backhoe or face positions for optimum versatility. Their design results in quicker, more complete fills.

Case SmartFit bucket teeth are now factory-installed, standard equipment on Case buckets purchased with all full-sized and mid-range excavators. Customers also may purchase additional SmartFit equipped Case buckets, or upgrade older model buckets, at Case Construction Equipment dealerships.

The SmartFit system provides stronger, more durable teeth and adapters, and hammerless, reusable locking pins. SmartFit bucket teeth are available in a variety of configurations to fit a full range of buckets. The SmartFit lineup includes general purpose, rock chisel, heavy penetrator, tiger, twin tiger and flare teeth.
